Pulling around the corner on 1st and 17th the buildings here were tall, singular with a surprisingly massive footprint unlike the usual tight knit rows of concrete and brick steepled through downtown. The line to the venue was starting to form around the corner and despite arriving almost fifteen minutes early it still took another twenty minutes to enter the venue. Parking was confusing to say the least but that’s Miami for you.
A demanding foyer opened to a surprisingly large lobby with a waiting security guard. Standing on-line there was a decent traction of people outside waiting to get in but the real party was upstairs. A DJ was playing a vibe of throbbing hip hop and Miami club music while onlookers packed onto the dance floor or in the corners taking obligatory selfie photos against muraled skyline of downtown Miami.
There’s a mini pop up market on the roof, set with a table of clothing vendors displaying their wares. A pair of portable racks house an eclectic collection of jerseys and tees. Card tap in hand, a vendor bags up the purchases and hands it to his customer: none other than Westside Gunn. Only in Miami and possibly only during art week can you meet a celebrity at a random rooftop at three o’clock in the afternoon.
In a loft across the hall bright and colorful furniture decorates a stark but surprisingly familiar room — all the OGs know what’s up. Professional lighting and camera equipment create a soft luxury to the otherwise brutalist texture of the concrete room. The space is decidedly isolated from the turn up next door but it’s here that the team from Ars MAG preps the photoshoot and the real work begins. There’s no dance floor but as golden hour folds into darkness and the party vibes continue at full swing the makers and creators in here find their own beat to groove to.
You just had to be there.
