Tucked away in a corner behind the food court are a pair of basketball hoops and a set of small blue tents. Strategically placed yellow cones and generously lined spray paint transform the parking lot into a makeshift streetball court.
At one end of the court, two hoopers get work in early while a DJ booms a contemporary mix of hip hop and classic jock tunes — can it really be called a canon hoops event if Space Jam isn’t in the rotation? Unassuming though it may be, this lean and modest setup is just the beginning of a timely new venture into women’s sports at a time when popularity has never been higher.
According to a press statement, UPSHOT League, owned by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, identifies itself as a “mission-focused enterprise” that uplifts and develops athletes, coaches, and staff while maintaining a commitment to their communities. By making their debut at Supergirl Pro, a recognizable name in women’s pro-semipro sports, the league is already making a splash by showcasing the best and brightest of what’s yet to come in the next generation of women’s hoopers.
They’re young, hungry, and on the rise — if only for the love of the game.
